If I Could Buy Only One – Oct 14th, 2017 VINTAGES Release
As part of our VINTAGES recap, we asked our critics: “If you could buy only one wine from this release – which one would it be and why?”
I suspect many WineAlign readers will be opening a bottle of Sonoma and Napa wine this weekend. It just seems impossible that a place so beautiful, and seemingly put on this Earth to create such beautiful things, could be so chaotically defiled and scarred. We have all connected to this place through its wine, some by having traveled and visited the wineries, others by getting to know the people behind the wines, as I have. I have a special message of condolence for Canadian Ray Signorello who lost so much. No matter what your connection, raise a glass to California this weekend. – David Lawrason
Our picks from the October 14th VINTAGES release:…
David Lawrason: It is such a shame that great sweet wines can’t find more willing homes. My only one pick this release is the Frescobaldi 2008 Castello di Pomino Vin Santo. This pale orange ‘vin santo’ has gorgeous scents of orange rind, walnut, honey, dried fig/apricot and pumpkin spice. It is medium-full bodied, sweet yet balanced by great acidity. Such poise and intricacy, and ultimately such great quality. Open your doors and hearts.
Michael Godel: This well-priced IGT rarely (perhaps even never) disappoints because it’s a fruit machine that does not take things (like structure and longevity) too seriously. I’m referring to Tenuta Sette Ponti Crognolo, a wine that will no doubt help transition into colder temperatures but also one that will develop nicely for up to seven years in the cellar. A note of firm, hematic depth in red clay and a minor calcareous accent lend credible multiplicity to the ripeness of 2015 fruit but the balance struck and satiny smooth consistency provided are the things of lore, to be praised and lauded. Crognolo is lovely and generous. It’s always the IGT Toscana host with the most.
Sara d’Amato: If you’re in the mood for discovery, here is an adventurous, dry white find from the Tokaj region of Hungary that showcases the aromatic nature of the hárslevelű grape variety and the zesty furmint. A tingling mineral texture and a crunchy saltiness add to the lively nature of the No. 8 Dry Tokaj perfect with cooler weather dishes like choucroute garnie or a white bean cassoulet.
