John Szabo – In the spirit of ‘Beyond Cabernet’, my only one this week is made from a grape that sommeliers love to love (no, it’s not riesling), and which delivers firm, dark-fruited, spicy wines in a cab-adjacent style. Trinity Hill’s 2022 Syrah is a sizzler, from the leading Syrah producer in the famed Gimblett Gravels district. Known especially for their top-of-the-line “Homage” bottling, this wine sits at the entry point to the Trinity Hill portfolio but still includes a good dollop of that prized Gimblett Gravels fruit, and offers an immediately approachable floral-earthy profile, with lots of ripe-sweet red and black fruit, and juicy, mid-weight palate (12.5% ABV declared). More Haut-Médoc than Margaux, and a fine value at that.
Megha Jandhyala – As the weather turns cooler, I feel drawn to plush, spicy, and comforting wines, like this vividly peppery, gently warming syrah from Trinity Hill. This is an immediately engaging and expressive wine, made with fruit sourced from vineyards in Gimblett Gravels and Ohiti, both subregions of the Hawke’s Bay region of New Zealand. I love how supple and generous, yet fresh and balanced it feels and the classic varietal hallmarks it bears, including dark fruit, violets, and savoury herbs like thyme and oregano. I would grab a few bottles of this syrah to enjoy over the fall and winter, paired with a cheesy, hearty vegetarian pizza or pasta.
