Michael Godel – Sometimes there comes a wine so confident and so representative of a place without needing to make any kind of grand appellative statement. The designation is indeed simply Rioja and while 2011 is the “back” vintage this is not self-described in any sort of Reserva or Gran Reserva form, but instead as a cru or single-vineyard wine. Ortega Ezquerro Don Quintín Ortega 2011 is quite firm and serious, advanced only in age but without any real underlying or obvious oxidative notes to show for it. Profound and illustrious seems more apropos in a Rioja that’s not just a matter of presence but a metered response to place and time. So intact, seamless and a tempranillo (with a fifth garnacha) that just seems to know what is and can be possible. Will drink beautifully for 10 more years.

David Lawrason– Premium barrel-aged sauvignon blanc-semillon blends are at the top pf my list of favourite styles of white wine, whether from Bordeaux or the New World. Arguably, but strongly argued, this Robert Mondavi To Kalon Vineyard Reserve Fumé Blanc 2016 is the best example of a barreled fume blanc in California. From very old vines in the To Kalon Vineyard this has a very lifted and exotic nose of juniper, lime, avocado toast, fresh dill, apricot and honey. It is full bodied, dense, firm and four square with superb focus and length. It never quits, while refreshing and exciting and dazzle every step of the way.

Sara d’Amato – Looking to treat yourself? This luxe chardonnay from chardonnay and pinot noir specialist, Flowers, is creamy and opulent but not simple and features an undercurrent of freshness. The palate of the Flowers Chardonnay 2019 offers a delicate leesy influence and fully integrated spice from careful barrel ageing. Unmistakably Californian with the underlying vibrancy and chalky texture placing it squarely on the Sonoma Coast. A slow-sipper.
