Taste Oregon 2018 – A Journey of Discovery
Discover what – and who – makes Oregon wine so distinctive.
Join Oregon’s top wineries on Tuesday, April 10th for an exclusive walk-around tasting at the historic Berkeley Church. Enjoy this exceptional opportunity to taste cutting edge wines from Oregon’s top producers. Sample the region’s iconic Pinots and explore the area’s more unique offerings. Thirty-five wineries from the Willamette Valley, Rogue Valley, and Columbia Gorge AVA’s, plus the Urban Wineries Association of Portland will be pouring over 170 wines. Experiment pairing these wines with delicious food being served by eight of Toronto’s great restaurants and shops (see below). This is a one-of-a-kind tasting that should not be missed!
When Oregon’s wine pioneers looked out across the state’s varied landscape they saw what others didn’t: a perfect place for wine.
They understood that Oregon’s northerly latitude meant grapes would get extra growing season sunlight for long, even ripening, and that the crisp, cool nights would help grapes retain their freshening acidity. Such a combination meant Oregon grapes would naturally achieve mature, balanced flavours and full varietal character. The resulting wines, they surmised, could be sustainably grown and made without dramatic manipulation to be naturally fresh, lively and have true-to-the-fruit flavours.
They were right. Today, the suitability of Oregon for great wine is unquestioned.
“Success in the Willamette Valley is found more than anywhere else in the diaspora where Burgundy expatriates Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are re-produced. Oregon doesn’t merely resemble Burgundy, it actually exceeds it.” Michael Godel, WineAlign
“At just 50 years young, small but mighty Oregon has carved a firm niche within national and international circles of devoted wine drinkers. Less than 20 years ago wines from Oregon were still regarded with scepticism. Today, no serious wine list is complete without representation from the Beaver State.” John Szabo MS, WineAlign, Volcanic Wines: Salt, Grit and Power
