Owners Bill and Marilyn Redelmeier have a long agricultural history in Ontario. Proud local food advocates, the Redelmeier’s originally operated Southbrook Farms as a thriving on-farm market and pick-your-own operation in Richmond Hill, ON. After establishing a boutique winery in 1991, the Redelmeiers sourced grapes from Niagara vineyards to craft premium VQA wines.

In 2005, guided by now Director of Winemaking and Viticulture Ann Sperling, the family purchased a prime 74-acre property located in the Four Mile Creek sub-appellation of Niagara-on-the-Lake. An additional 75 acres were added when an adjacent property became available, accommodating the pastures and barns for a resident flock of sheep. When the doors of the LEED-Gold, award-winning hospitality pavilion officially opened in 2008, Southbrook Vineyards was Canada’s first winery certified both organic and biodynamic.

While under Southbrook’s care, the farm has never been treated with chemical pesticides nor synthetic fertilizers. This stewardship is deepened by biodynamic practices, which are founded upon an understanding of the vineyard as a component of an integrated, self-sustaining, living ecosystem. Soil fertility is solar powered, with ruminants converting pasture into nutrients. The result is a bio-diverse property rich with wildlife, sheep, pollinators, predatory insects and ingredients for biodynamic preparations. The warm Four Mile Creek sub-appellation, clay-rich soils and careful agriculture produce distinctive wines from Chardonnay, Semillon, the red bordelaise varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot) and Syrah.
